Recording
Arm the transport and the tracks
Recording happens in two steps.
- Click the "record" button on every track you want to record. Any track can be armed; a track whose button is not armed will not be recorded.
- Click the "record" button in the transport bar, at the bottom of the window. It highlights: the recording mode is armed.
What this second click does depends on the "Recording starts playback" setting in Settings › Recording. When it is on (the default), the click immediately starts playback, and recording of the armed tracks. When it is off, the button only arms, and recording starts when you then press "play".
Start and stop
Once the transport and at least one track are armed, recording starts (on the click on "record", or when you press "play" if you turned off "Recording starts playback"). After the optional pre-roll and countdown, the armed tracks start recording while the other tracks play normally. If playback was already running, a click on "record" records immediately, with no countdown.
In recording mode, playback does not stop by itself at the end of the last track. Press "stop" (the same button as "play") to stop recording and playback together. The recorded takes then appear on the tracks concerned.
If the transport "record" button is armed but no track has its own button armed, "play" simply starts playback without recording anything. If the "record" button is not armed at all, "play" behaves as normal playback and stops at the end of the last track.
Metronome and countdown
The right-hand section of the transport bar shows the session tempo and time signature (chosen when it was created) and holds the metronome button, which can be enabled for playback as well as for recording. The metronome accents the first beat of every bar, or, for a compound signature (6/8, 9/8, 12/8), every dotted beat.
In Settings › Recording, "Before recording" section:
- Pre-roll: a small lead (none, one beat, two beats, or one bar) recorded before the start point, so an attack played slightly early is not cut off.
- Countdown: a count-in (none, one, two or four bars) played before recording actually starts, to give you time to get ready.
- During the countdown: two independent checkboxes to hear the metronome, the already recorded music, or both, during that count-in.
